So every May, TV land takes a break and we’re greeted with a whole bunch of cliffhangers to ensure we’d tune in again for the new season. Ever so often, a series will make its final curtain call, and that’s when all the emotions will start going out of control. For me, at least. This year, I say goodbye to 24 and Lost.

I’ve been a huge, huge Jack Bauer fan ever since 24 first started. It was a great concept, had the whole split screen thing (which was something completely new and innovative for TV) and re-introduced the world to the amazing Kiefer Sutherland, sealing his credibility as an actor, and an action star. I remember many critics wondering about the network’s bold decision to televise the programme, especially since it was aired only months after September 11. Yet, the premise of the show sort of helped many to escape the harsh reality of terrorism and allowed us to have faith that all will be good in the world again, mostly because we could now find a hero in Jack Bauer, who was relentlessly and awesomely kicking all the bad guys’ asses, while we sit safely in our homes. Also, over the years, the show has managed to introduce some seriously amazing characters who have exemplified the meaning of loyalty and also others who are just that deliciously hateful. It has also never shied away from killing off important characters and while it’s brought about too many tears, this has also kept the show as enrapturing as it has been all these years. Sure, not every season was stellar but at the end of it all, us fans knew that the show was really about Jack Bauer being the biggest badass of a hero that TV viewers have ever seen and we didn’t complain. Not much anyway.

Lost, on the other hand, was a show that I had to persevere with. And boy, am I glad I stuck with it! I was also there from day one, when the plane crashed, and every one was wondering if they would ever get rescued. But it got confusing, and I started wondering if it really was a show that was true to its namesake. More mysteries were introduced and soon, fans realised that the show was a lot more than what we all thought it was about. A whole lot more. Sure, even today, many things remain unexplained but half the fun of watching Lost was being able to come up with theories of your own and discussing them with other fans. In addition, what this show did spectacularly was its ability to make us want to learn about this entire ensemble of characters, and later, develop emotional attachments to. And because Lost also had no qualms about killing off main characters, as you may probably figure, tears flowed freely too.

I think both finales were completely satisfactory and true to the heart of both shows. But now that I know what Lost is really about, I’m not sure if I’ll re-watch the entire series as readily as 24. It does have better writing and being more character-driven, it is without a doubt, more compelling to watch. It’s just… I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch it again for all the clues I may have missed, because really – what’s the point now that all has been revealed and there’s nothing to theorise anymore? On the other hand, I can simply re-watch any season of 24 any time for its pure action-entertainment value. But that’s just me. Needless to say, I’m gonna miss both shows dearly as they both have been a big part of my TV-viewing life. So goodbye, 24 and Lost. You’ve entertained me well over the past 8 years and I thank you for that.

Pick your five favorite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions. Don’t cheat!

1. Friends
2. Glee
3. Parenthood
4. How I Met Your Mother
5. 24

Who’s your favorite character in 2?
Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer). He’s a great character with lots of depth and the boy’s got range!

Who’s your least favorite character in 1?
Ayyyy… How do I decide? I LOVE the entire ensemble! I refuse to answer this question. (Okay, but if I really had to choose, probably Phoebe? I always found her a little too kooky.)

What’s your favorite episode of 4?
This is tough. But I’m gonna say Slap Bet. It started the chain of Slaps (in which we got to hear this gorgeous song after the 3rd Slap) and introduced the world to Robin Sparkles. ‘Nuff said.

What’s your favorite season of 5?
Day (Season) 7 was really, really good. Plenty of action and jaw-dropping moments.

What’s your favorite ship in 3?
Adam & Kristina Braverman. Great portrayal of a husband and wife dealing with a kid who has Asperger’s.

Who is your anti-ship in 2?
Will & Terri, I guess? But they’re not together anymore, anyway…

How long have you watched 1?
Since its very first introduction in 1994.

How did you become interested in 3?
4 words: Lauren Graham, Peter Krause

Who’s your favorite actor in 4?
Neil Patrick Harris. He steals every scene he’s in.

Which show do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?
As much as I love ‘em all, hands down, it has to be Friends. There’s just wayyyy too much love going on there.

Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?
Seeing as Parenthood is still only in its first season, of course it’ll have to be Friends.

If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Robin Scherbatsky. She’s actually a really cool character and isn’t whiny at all.

How would you kill off your favorite character in 1?
I don’t even wanna think about it! But it’s easy, really. My favourite character’s Chandler Bing and if I had to kill him off, I’ll most likely write about him and Monica moving to the ‘burbs. That’s 2 characters gone, but at least it’s believable.

Give a random quote from 2.
”When I pulled my hamstring I went to a misogynist.”

Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Seeing as how How I Met Your Mother has Neil Patrick Harris, and he’ll be able to work it anywhere, I’d say, yes.

Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
Phoebe and Chandler would be strange, but they’ve had their moments. Especially when Phoebe was trying to “seduce” Chandler so he can be honest about his “secret” relationship with Monica.

Has 5 inspired you in any way?
Um, it’s inspired me to never join law enforcement?

Overall, which show has a better cast, 3 or 5?
Parenthood, actually. It’s got really, really amazing actors. 24 pretty much rides on the shoulders of Kiefer Sutherland.

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4?
I doubt Glee has a theme song even though it’s filled with music. But How I Met Your Mother has a really great number in the opening credits. Always makes you wanna sing along.

<start obsessive fangirl cooing>

Glee’s back! And I was totally reduced to a puddle of goo as I was watching the new episode. It probably wasn’t the best episode, but I loved it nonetheless. The introduction of the new characters (Idina Menzel! Jonathan Groff!) got me all excited and squealing, that even I got slightly annoyed at myself for being such a fangirl. Heh. Anyhow, I won’t give anything away but this new ep had quotable quotes aplenty! Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see a couple of tunes from two old school rock bands, which I thought the cast did a pretty good job covering. Goes to show how much influence the series is having on music today, huh?

And I really don’t want to spoil you, but you MUST check out Kurt’s face when Finn does his solo. It’s AWESOME. :p

Okay then, I think I’ll go watch it a second time now.

I’m so happy Glee’s back!!!

</end obsessive fangirl cooing>

I’ve never quite found another family drama that has tugged at my heartstrings since Gilmore Girls. Lauren Graham was crazy amazing in her role and her charisma was so infectious that I actually missed seeing her on the small screen after Gilmore Girls went off the air. So when I heard she was cast in Parenthood, I let out a tiny fangirl squeal and promptly marked down the show’s premiere in my calendar.

Being a big TV junkie, I’d already wanted to watch the show because I knew Peter Krause had been cast as Adam Braverman, the eldest son and the glue that holds everyone together. And goodness knows, I love me some Peter Krause. He is such a good actor, that at one point, I wanted to declare him my TV husband. No kidding. Then when I learnt that Lauren Graham was cast, I just knew this show was gonna be perfection. But I honestly didn’t know it was gonna be as good as this.

So exactly how good are we talking? Less than 20 minutes into the premiere, I found myself really caring about each of the characters in the Braverman family. The actors and writing were that compelling. And even though it’s a big family, with plenty of characters to keep track of, they all have their own storylines that are interesting enough to stand alone. From a family newly discovering that their son has Aspergers, to a career mum struggling to balance her life with her kid and stay-home husband, everything has been so wonderfully written that I’m willing to let slide an annoying character or two. Since then, there’s not been a single episode where I haven’t cried. That’s right. I’m openly admitting that I have been reduced to a gooey puddle of emotions in each of the 6 episodes that have aired so far.

Parenthood is as realistic as it can ever get for a TV show. Of course, this review might be completely biased seeing how I have mad love for Peter Krause and Lauren Graham, who were particularly stellar, but as an ensemble, the family dynamics were completely believable too. There’s also the cutest little boy in there, whom I’m sure you’d adore as well. ;p

I won’t gush more about it, so I’ll let the promo do the talking.
