It is undeniably one of the major centres for film, TV, music and the arts. And as someone who grew up on a (very unhealthy) diet of American pop culture, you can imagine how thrilled I am, to finally be able to stand in the streets of Manhattan and indulge in the heart and spirit of New York.
About 6 years ago, I started dreaming up a big trip to NYC. We’d stay in the Samantha Brown-approved Library Hotel, do plenty of mad shopping on Fifth Avenue, traipse around Central Park, bask in the very fluorescent Times Square and catch a Broadway musical. This trip was supposed to happen in 2010. But when we worked out the budget, we realised it would be near impossible to do everything we wanted to do in New York without squandering a huge portion of our savings. So we decided to postpone it for a year lest we come back penniless.
(Unfortunately, we still don’t have enough of a budget to stay at the Library Hotel because none of us has struck it rich.)
We’ll be there for 12 days, during which, I imagine there will be plenty of ooh-ing and aah-ing, with my mouth agape half the time. I don’t wish to put too much pressure on the city, but I have high expectations. I expect to be blown away by the the American Museum of Natural History. I expect to be dumbfounded at the sight of the Empire State Building (one of my favourite pieces of architecture). I expect to be charmed by the eclectic mix of neighbourhoods. I expect to be seduced by the New York skyline from the Staten Island Ferry… Yep, NO PRESSURE AT ALL.
For me, this trip to New York is not just a “vacation”, because it really is a lot more significant than that. It’s a fulfillment of a long-time dream. :)
(This marks the first in a series of countdown posts to NYC.)
