Ch-ch-changes

One of the students going to Germany with us is this vivacious girl who talks a-mile-a-minute. Sometimes, it’s hard keeping up with her energy. Today, she had a casual conversation with our Principal and there was no sense of formality whatsoever throughout the entire time they were chatting. She whined about her results, displayed plenty of candour while she expressed her opinion about issues and just wasn’t afraid to be herself. It got my Principal completely enthralled, most probably because no student has ever been as relaxed as she was around him. Then out of the blue, he remarked that this girl reminded him of a younger version of me. Um, say what?

I wasn’t sure what exactly sparked off the comparison but I later found out that he thinks we both share the same sort of enthusiasm when we speak. And I guess I agree. I mean, I know I can get quite animated when I talk to people (I definitely got this from my dad) and I can certainly rattle on. I guess I was surprised he caught on mostly because I don’t think I’ve ever shown that side of me around him. At least not that I can remember anyway.

I wasn’t always like that. I was a lot quieter when I was younger and was more prone to play by the rules, so to speak (I know someone who would attest to that *ahem*). Part of me believes that I was more “toned down” back then because my mother’s ex-classmate was a teacher in my Primary School and I was afraid she’d keep a very watchful eye on me. Fearing I’d get into trouble with my folks, I made sure I stayed clean. The other part of me simply thinks that I modelled my behaviour after my mum, who’s definitely not as animated as my dad. Since dad was an Inflight Supervisor and wasn’t around that much, everything I knew came from my mother.

All that changed when I got to Secondary School. It was a clean slate. There was no one there to govern me any more, and I could push limits. It was at this stage that I grew into my true(?) self and became more extroverted. I also started to understand my father better and his personality definitely influenced and shaped my being. Over time, my confidence grew and being as exposed as I was to the mass media, I also allowed myself to adopt some traits that were deemed favourable in my eyes. And of course, as we grow older and interact with more people, we’ll evolve.

So I don’t know what I’m gonna be like 20, or even 10 years from now. I may go back to being more like my mother. Whatever it is, I just hope I’ll be a better version of me.

My TV goodbyes

So every May, TV land takes a break and we’re greeted with a whole bunch of cliffhangers to ensure we’d tune in again for the new season. Ever so often, a series will make its final curtain call, and that’s when all the emotions will start going out of control. For me, at least. This year, I say goodbye to 24 and Lost.

I’ve been a huge, huge Jack Bauer fan ever since 24 first started. It was a great concept, had the whole split screen thing (which was something completely new and innovative for TV) and re-introduced the world to the amazing Kiefer Sutherland, sealing his credibility as an actor, and an action star. I remember many critics wondering about the network’s bold decision to televise the programme, especially since it was aired only months after September 11. Yet, the premise of the show sort of helped many to escape the harsh reality of terrorism and allowed us to have faith that all will be good in the world again, mostly because we could now find a hero in Jack Bauer, who was relentlessly and awesomely kicking all the bad guys’ asses, while we sit safely in our homes. Also, over the years, the show has managed to introduce some seriously amazing characters who have exemplified the meaning of loyalty and also others who are just that deliciously hateful. It has also never shied away from killing off important characters and while it’s brought about too many tears, this has also kept the show as enrapturing as it has been all these years. Sure, not every season was stellar but at the end of it all, us fans knew that the show was really about Jack Bauer being the biggest badass of a hero that TV viewers have ever seen and we didn’t complain. Not much anyway.

Lost, on the other hand, was a show that I had to persevere with. And boy, am I glad I stuck with it! I was also there from day one, when the plane crashed, and every one was wondering if they would ever get rescued. But it got confusing, and I started wondering if it really was a show that was true to its namesake. More mysteries were introduced and soon, fans realised that the show was a lot more than what we all thought it was about. A whole lot more. Sure, even today, many things remain unexplained but half the fun of watching Lost was being able to come up with theories of your own and discussing them with other fans. In addition, what this show did spectacularly was its ability to make us want to learn about this entire ensemble of characters, and later, develop emotional attachments to. And because Lost also had no qualms about killing off main characters, as you may probably figure, tears flowed freely too.

I think both finales were completely satisfactory and true to the heart of both shows. But now that I know what Lost is really about, I’m not sure if I’ll re-watch the entire series as readily as 24. It does have better writing and being more character-driven, it is without a doubt, more compelling to watch. It’s just… I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch it again for all the clues I may have missed, because really – what’s the point now that all has been revealed and there’s nothing to theorise anymore? On the other hand, I can simply re-watch any season of 24 any time for its pure action-entertainment value. But that’s just me. Needless to say, I’m gonna miss both shows dearly as they both have been a big part of my TV-viewing life. So goodbye, 24 and Lost. You’ve entertained me well over the past 8 years and I thank you for that.

TV Show Meme

Pick your five favorite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions. Don’t cheat!

1. Friends
2. Glee
3. Parenthood
4. How I Met Your Mother
5. 24

Who’s your favorite character in 2?
Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer). He’s a great character with lots of depth and the boy’s got range!

Who’s your least favorite character in 1?
Ayyyy… How do I decide? I LOVE the entire ensemble! I refuse to answer this question. (Okay, but if I really had to choose, probably Phoebe? I always found her a little too kooky.)

What’s your favorite episode of 4?
This is tough. But I’m gonna say Slap Bet. It started the chain of Slaps (in which we got to hear this gorgeous song after the 3rd Slap) and introduced the world to Robin Sparkles. ‘Nuff said.

What’s your favorite season of 5?
Day (Season) 7 was really, really good. Plenty of action and jaw-dropping moments.

What’s your favorite ship in 3?
Adam & Kristina Braverman. Great portrayal of a husband and wife dealing with a kid who has Asperger’s.

Who is your anti-ship in 2?
Will & Terri, I guess? But they’re not together anymore, anyway…

How long have you watched 1?
Since its very first introduction in 1994. :)

How did you become interested in 3?
4 words: Lauren Graham, Peter Krause

Who’s your favorite actor in 4?
Neil Patrick Harris. He steals every scene he’s in.

Which show do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?
As much as I love ‘em all, hands down, it has to be Friends. There’s just wayyyy too much love going on there.

Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?
Seeing as Parenthood is still only in its first season, of course it’ll have to be Friends.

If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Robin Scherbatsky. She’s actually a really cool character and isn’t whiny at all.

How would you kill off your favorite character in 1?
I don’t even wanna think about it! But it’s easy, really. My favourite character’s Chandler Bing and if I had to kill him off, I’ll most likely write about him and Monica moving to the ‘burbs. That’s 2 characters gone, but at least it’s believable.

Give a random quote from 2.
”When I pulled my hamstring I went to a misogynist.”

Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Seeing as how How I Met Your Mother has Neil Patrick Harris, and he’ll be able to work it anywhere, I’d say, yes.

Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
Phoebe and Chandler would be strange, but they’ve had their moments. Especially when Phoebe was trying to “seduce” Chandler so he can be honest about his “secret” relationship with Monica.

Has 5 inspired you in any way?
Um, it’s inspired me to never join law enforcement?

Overall, which show has a better cast, 3 or 5?
Parenthood, actually. It’s got really, really amazing actors. 24 pretty much rides on the shoulders of Kiefer Sutherland.

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4?
I doubt Glee has a theme song even though it’s filled with music. But How I Met Your Mother has a really great number in the opening credits. Always makes you wanna sing along. :)
