Back to basicsApril 5th, 2009 @ 16:42

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, I was recently involved in my church’s Junior Sunday School camp held over 3 days during the March school holidays. It was our first camp in about 5 years and we weren’t sure if it would be well-received by the kids and their parents, and if it was even feasible at all. Y’see, we’d only thought of it in January, and by most standards, organising a camp in such a short amount of time may be challenging. Nonetheless, we trusted God to provide as we planned and did our best to make the camp interesting and relevant for a bunch of Primary schoolers.
At this camp, I was constantly amazed by the kids, as one by one, they showed me acts of obedience, love, gentleness, patience… The fruit of the Spirit was truly evident in them. And there were also plenty of moments where I was reminded of the importance of child-like faith and rejoicing over everything that God has done. Too often, have I forgotten to praise the Lord whether things go awry or when circumstances are in our favour, so when I saw that some of these kids could find the positive in all situations, it was humbling, to say the least.
Our camp’s theme was “Trust & Obey”, so we kept emphasing that trust and obedience were correlated, and that the kids had to put their faith in action and read the Bible daily. We had several church newbies at the camp and they were all extremely accepting of God’s promises, and so eager to learn. In fact, I was reminded of the importance of child-like faith when I learnt today that 2 of the girls who joined us, have been so committed to reading the Bible every night, that one of them actually cried one evening, cos she had too much homework, and it seemed like she couldn’t do her daily devotion. I was immediately overwhelmed with guilt cos I’ve never been one to shy from making excuses and blaming my hectic schedule whenever I don’t make time for the Lord. I was ashamed that I have so readily allowed the affairs of the world to keep me distracted.
Even though we organised this camp for the kids, I’m realising that God also wanted me to learn and grow from this experience. Truly, it is when you’re serving that you learn so much about your own inadequacies, it keeps you rooted. Not only did I have to trust God on more than one occasion, it also reminded me of how I have to go back to what’s important and simply obey. After all that He has done for me, it’s the least I can do. Let’s hope I won’t be forgetting this lesson anytime soon.

For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these (children).. and through the lips of children and infants He has ordained praise.. so I’m not surprised that you’ve learnt much from the children’s camp

You should’ve seen them. They were tiny wonders.
